Dr. Adam Jonathan Con

Georgia State Repertoire and Standards Chair for Ethnic and Multicultural Issues

I hope you are having a great Spring semester! I enjoyed seeing many of you in Savannah at GMEA and in Miami at the National ACDA Conference.

I’ve got some new repertoire suggestions for you! You may be looking for something to spice up your spring concerts or to add some variety to your LGPE repertoire. May I suggest the following:

Kalinka by Prokhorov, (ssab)

Serenade by Arensky, (satb + cello)

In the Field a Birch Tree was Standing by Solovieva (unison)

Bonse Aba (satb) (Zambian)

Great Getting’ Up Morning, Arranged by David Giardiniere (ssaattbb)

Yo Vivo Cantando by Jay Althouse, (satb)

Ahay Tuburan, Arranged by Ruth Dwyer and Martin Ellis, (ssa)

At the 2007 ACDA National Convention in Miami, Florida, there were multicultural pieces in many groups' performances as well as the following performing groups:

Indonesian Children’s Choir, Jakarta, Indonesia

Drakensberg Boys’ Choir, Drakensburg, South Africa

Voces nordicae, Stockholm, Sweden

Elmer Iseler Singers, Ontario, Canada

and

National Multicultural Honor Choir, Rollo Dilworth, Francisco Nuñez, conductors

I’ve tried to answer as many of the emails that folks have sent regarding ethnic and multicultural issues in choral music and in music education. If I haven’t responded to you yet, the email may have disappeared in cyber space! I apologize. Please don’t hesitate to contact me again at adamcon@georgiasouthern.edu.  Or phone me at 912-681-5845.
